INSTRUCTOR AND PARTICIPANTS
The simulation training held at the Tshwane University of Technology from the 11 to the
th
12 of April 2019 covered all three approaches to business simulation, namely discrete
th
TSHWANE UNIVERSITY OF TECHOLOGY event, agent based, and systems dynamics modelling.
(BUILDING 4, TUPELLONG)
The simulation software used was AnyLogic which supports all three methods. AnyLogic
software allows for multimethod simulation. AnyLogic works on the Windows, macOS and
Linux operating systems. Like any other simulation programme, it requires a program-
ming language; AnyLogic uses a Java-based programming language. The flexibility of
such software allows the virtual utilisation of simulation in all the sectors and departments
of an enterprise.
The training also provided postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows with a
license to use the professional version of AnyLogic. The professional version provides
students and postdoctoral fellows with access to a cloud where various models are up-
loaded, and other people can share their inputs. The students within Gibela are conduct-
ing their research around the Demanufacturing Operations Model, Robotic ARC Welding,
Learning Factory Simulation, Production ramp, Assembly Planning Framework, Internet
of Things and Energy Efficiency. This training will go a long way towards developing their
skills and motivating them to innovate. This innovation can benefit the rail manufacturing
sector which for many years has lacked the capacity for growth. However, with the help of
government, academia and people in industry we can develop skills which can enrich the
manufacturing industry.
